Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, high acidity, dry

Lugana comes from the southern shore of Lake Garda, and the grape is Turbiana — long assumed to be the same as Verdicchio, though DNA work suggests the relationship is closer than identical. What makes it distinctive is the soil: ancient glacial clay, dense and calcareous and unusually rich in mineral salts, which gives the wines a saline backbone that is structural rather than superficial. The lake acts as a thermal regulator, evening out the temperature swings. Villabella's Cà del Lago is a single-site bottling. Expect citrus and green apple with white flowers and almond, medium-bodied with a firm acid line and a savoury, saline finish. Unusually for an Italian white at this weight, good Lugana ages — turning waxy, nutty and honeyed over a decade while the acidity holds.
