Tasting profile
Structure: medium-bodied, high acidity, dry
Franciacorta is Italy's most serious traditional-method sparkling wine, produced in the moraine hills above Lake Iseo in Lombardy. Its regulations are in some respects stricter than Champagne's: a non-vintage Franciacorta must spend at least eighteen months on lees against Champagne's fifteen, and the wines are made from Chardonnay with Pinot Nero and sometimes Pinot Bianco. The result bears no resemblance to Prosecco, which is tank-fermented and made for immediate freshness — Franciacorta is textured, autolytic and structured. Expect green apple and citrus with white flowers, a fine persistent bead, and genuine brioche and hazelnut depth from the extended lees contact. Dry and precise, and better with food than most sparkling wine.
