Jura

**Jura** is a small, mountainous French wine region east of Burgundy, near the Swiss border. Though tiny, it has a devoted following for its highly distinctive and unusual wines. **Wines & grapes** — Whites come from Chardonnay and the local Savagnin; reds and rosés from Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir. Its most famous style is Vin Jaune, a nutty, sherry-like white aged under a film of yeast, plus the sweet straw wine Vin de Paille and the sparkling Crémant du Jura. **Character** — A cool climate and marl soils, combined with deliberate oxidative aging, give many wines a savoury, nutty, curry-spice complexity unlike anywhere else. **Good to know** — Vin Jaune is bottled in the distinctive squat 62 cl clavelin.
