Pinotage

**Pinotage** is a red grape created in South Africa in 1925 by crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsault, and it has become the country's distinctive homegrown signature variety. **In the glass** — it yields deeply coloured wines with dark plum, blackberry and banana notes, often with a smoky, earthy or savoury character, medium-to-full body and firm but ripe tannins. **Where it grows** — it is overwhelmingly a South African speciality, planted across the Cape from Stellenbosch to Swartland, made in styles that span easy, juicy "coffee Pinotage" to serious, age-worthy reds and even rosé. Small plantings exist in a handful of other New World countries. **At the table** — a great match for barbecue, grilled sausages and game. **Cellaring** — lighter versions are best young, but the more structured bottlings can develop well over five to ten years.
