Ashbourne is Anthony Hamilton Russell's second estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley behind Hermanus, and this Pinotage is a deliberate argument: that the grape, given clay-rich shale soils, a cool maritime site and no attempt to make it taste sweet or smoky, can be a serious wine. It is picked earlier and made more like a Cape red of the old school — restrained ripeness, French oak, real tannin. Expect black plum and bramble over fynbos herbs, graphite and dark chocolate, with high acidity, firm structure and a smoky, mineral finish. Nothing like the coffee-and-caramel Pinotage that gave the variety its reputation.
