**Montepulciano** is a red grape from central and southern Italy, most closely tied to the Abruzzo region on the Adriatic coast. It is one of Italy's most widely planted reds and should not be confused with the Tuscan town of Montepulciano, whose wines are made from Sangiovese. **In the glass** — deeply coloured, generous and juicy, with ripe black cherry and plum fruit, gentle spice, moderate acidity and soft, ample tannins that make it approachable young. Styles range from easy everyday reds to more concentrated, structured wines. **Where it grows** — Abruzzo is its home, where Montepulciano d'Abruzzo covers a wide quality spectrum; it is also important in the Marche, Molise and Puglia. Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is a deep-hued rosé made from the same grape. **At the table** — a natural match for tomato-based pasta, pizza and grilled sausages. **Cellaring** — most is made for early drinking, though top single-estate versions can age gracefully for ten years or so.
