Wendouree farm old dry-grown vines on the Clare Valley floor with methods barely changed in a century — basket pressing, old oak, no fining or filtration — and produce reds among the longest-lived in Australia. Shiraz and Malbec have been blended here for generations: Malbec adds violet perfume and dark-fruited flesh to Shiraz's frame without softening it. Blackberry and dark plum with violet, black pepper, dried herb and an earthy depth. Full-bodied with formidable chalky tannin and high acidity. Genuinely difficult in youth and worth the decades it asks for.
