Shiraz and Mataro have been field-blended in the Clare Valley for well over a century, and Wendouree still make the pairing the old way — dry-grown old vines, basket pressed, aged in old oak, unfined and unfiltered. Mataro contributes leather, iron and a gamey savour beneath Shiraz's blackberry and dark plum, with black pepper, dried herb and an earthy, ferrous depth running through. Full-bodied with a wall of chalky tannin and high acidity. Severe and closed in youth; among the longest-lived reds in the country once it opens.
