Riesling MarMar

Tasting profile

Structure: full-bodied, low tannin, high acidity, dry

MarMar is von Winning's rarest dry Riesling: a parcel of less than a quarter hectare of limestone-rich ground inside the Forster Ungeheuer Grosse Lage, made as just three 500-litre barrels and aged twenty-four months on full lees. The style is deliberately Burgundian — spontaneous fermentation in oak gives smoky, flinty citrus, yellow apple and candied lime over a chalky mineral spine, with vanilla-toned oak framing rather than fruit sweetness. Full and concentrated for Riesling yet bone dry, carried by racy Pfalz acidity and exceptional length. Not a classic Riesling and not trying to be — closer in feel to a grand white Burgundy grown on Riesling's acid line.
