Tasting profile
Structure: medium-bodied, low tannin, high acidity, dry
Barbera is Piedmont's most planted red and its defining trait is unusual: very high acidity with low tannin, the reverse of Nebbiolo alongside which it grows. That combination makes it exceptionally food-friendly and approachable young. Asti is its heartland — Barbera d'Asti is generally considered the finest expression, more perfumed and lifted than the Alba version. Vietti, at Castiglione Falletto, are one of Piedmont's most celebrated houses, known for single-vineyard Barolo but also for taking Barbera seriously long before it was fashionable. Expect deep ruby colour, sour cherry and dark plum with violets and a savoury, faintly bitter edge, medium-bodied with vivid acidity and soft tannins. Bright and juicy rather than structured.
Serving: Serve at 15–17 °C.

Where it comes from
Piedmont, Italy
Piedmont (Piemonte) sits in the northwest of Italy, tucked against the Alps, and is prized for some of the country's most serious and long-lived red wines.
Barbera
Barbera is a red grape from the Piedmont region of northwest Italy, long the everyday red of the area and now taken seriously enough to rival its noble neighbour Nebbiolo in quality-minded hands.
