Bansella

Tasting profile

Structure: full-bodied, medium tannin, high acidity, dry

Prunotto's Bansella is a Nizza DOCG, the top designation for Barbera from the hills around Nizza Monferrato, made entirely from Barbera from the estate's Bansella vineyard. About a year in second- and third-fill barriques adds vanilla, sweet spice and cocoa to ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry. It is full and generous, with Barbera's lively acidity keeping it fresh and soft tannins in the background. A rich, food-friendly Barbera that improves over several years in bottle.

Where it comes from

Piedmont, Italy

Piedmont (Piemonte) sits in the northwest of Italy, tucked against the Alps, and is prized for some of the country's most serious and long-lived red wines.

Barbera

Barbera is a red grape from the Piedmont region of northwest Italy, long the everyday red of the area and now taken seriously enough to rival its noble neighbour Nebbiolo in quality-minded hands.
