Te Whare Ra have taken fruit from Clayvin since 2016, and Anna Flowerday's verdict on the site is unambiguous: it was the game-changer for Pinot Noir in Marlborough. The vineyard was planted in 1991 by Mike Eaton at the top of the Brancott Valley, north-facing on dense clay, high-density and certified organic — the region's first commercial hillside Pinot site. This bottling is a single-clone selection, 5096, kept apart in Te Whare Ra's characteristically small tanks. Dark, muscular and brooding but with real beauty to it: black cherry and plum with spice, good structure and focus, plenty of ripe dark fruit held together by firm acidity. Serious rather than charming, and built to be aged.
