Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, high acidity, sweet

Schloss Johannisberg, the Rheingau estate credited with the first Eiswein in 1858, makes its ice wine from Riesling grown on the steep south-facing Johannisberg hill, on loess-loam over Taunus quartzite. The grapes are harvested frozen, giving a wine of intense sweetness matched by high acidity. With age it moves from candied citrus and apricot towards honey, toffee, baked apple and petrol, the acidity keeping it lively long after the fruit has softened.
