Rheingau

**Rheingau** — a compact, historic wine region in Germany where the Rhine briefly turns to flow east-to-west, giving a long stretch of south-facing slopes. Despite its small size it has an outsized reputation. **Wines & grapes** — Riesling rules here, made in dry to nobly sweet styles of real precision and longevity. Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), particularly around Assmannshausen, is the notable red. **Character** — The river's east-west bend maximises sun exposure and reflects light and warmth onto the vineyards, while slate and other soils lend the Rieslings their structure. The wines tend to be fuller, firmer and more powerful than those of the Mosel, with pronounced minerality and the capacity to age for decades. **Good to know** — The Rheingau is a cradle of German wine history: it was here that Schloss Johannisberg helped pioneer late-harvest Spätlese wines.
