Tasting profile

Structure: full-bodied, high tannin, medium acidity, dry

Numero Uno is Plozza's flagship Valtellina Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca), the house's modern take on Sforzato: the grapes are left to dry for about two months before fermentation, and the wine then spends 18 to 24 months in new French barriques rather than the chestnut casks of Plozza's other reds. The result is dense and high in alcohol, with plum compote, raisin and black fruit jam lifted by clove and pepper, vanilla and roast notes from the oak, chocolate on the finish and firm, ripe Nebbiolo tannins. Labelled IGT (Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio, now Alpi Retiche).

Serving: Serve at 16–18 °C.
