Nebbiolo from the Valtellina, an Alpine valley in Lombardy running east to west along the Adda — the only orientation that would let the grape ripen this far north. The vines grow on terraces cut into near-vertical south-facing slopes, all of it worked by hand. Locally the grape is called Chiavennasca, and the Alpine setting changes it: lighter, higher-toned and more floral than Piedmont's Barolo or Barbaresco, with the same structural bones. Rosso di Valtellina is the entry tier, released young without the extended ageing of Valtellina Superiore or Sforzato. Red cherry and wild raspberry with rose petal, dried herbs, white pepper and a tart pomegranate edge. Medium-bodied with fine tannin and brisk acidity. Serve it slightly cool. Made for the table rather than the cellar.
