The Lovedale vineyard was planted in 1946 on sandy flats at Pokolbin, and the Semillon from it is one of Australia's great white wines. The style is unlike anything else: picked early at around eleven percent alcohol, fermented in tank, never seeing oak, and bottled austere. Young it is lemon, green apple and cut grass with searing acidity and almost no flesh. With a decade or more it undergoes a genuine transformation into toast, honey, beeswax and lanolin, gaining weight and texture it never had at the start while the acid line holds firm. Light-bodied, bone dry, and made to be waited for.
