Mencía from a single site, made by Bodegas Álvarez de Toledo — a Bierzo house whose range is built on this variety and Godello — and bottled under the Marqués de Toro name. Despite that name it is not a Toro wine: the appellation is Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León, the broad regional designation, which is precisely what allows Mencía to be grown and labelled here rather than the Tinta de Toro that Toro DO requires. Mencía at its best is a medium-bodied, high-acid red closer in spirit to Cabernet Franc or Loire reds than to Spain's warmer styles: fresh blackberry and raspberry with violets, wet earth and a peppery, faintly herbal lift over fine tannins. Around 14%. Serve it a touch cool, around 15 to 16°C, which sharpens the aromatics — and treat it as a food wine, particularly with lamb.
