Vermentino di Gallura is Sardinia's only DOCG and the sole one on the island, covering the granite hills of Gallura in the far north-east. The soil is the point: decomposed granite gives the wine a stony, mineral cut that Vermentino does not show elsewhere, and the Superiore designation requires higher minimum alcohol and lower yields than the standard bottling. Jankara work near Tempio Pausania at the heart of the zone. Expect white peach and citrus with white flowers and a distinct saline, almost seaspray quality, more weight and texture through the middle than the Ligurian or Tuscan versions, and the faintly bitter almond twist the variety carries everywhere. Serve it cool rather than cold, with anything from the sea.
