Vermentino

**Vermentino** is a white grape of the Mediterranean coast, closely identified with Italy's Liguria and the island of Sardinia, and known in southern France as Rolle. It makes some of the most refreshing, sea-breezy whites of the region. **In the glass** — bright and zesty, showing citrus, green apple, white flowers and a distinctive herbal, saline note, with crisp acidity, light-to-medium body and often a faintly bitter, almond-tinged finish. **Where it grows** — its strongholds are Sardinia and the Ligurian coast in Italy, and Corsica and Provence in France, where as Rolle it lends fragrance to blends. It is grown in Tuscany, the Languedoc and increasingly in Australia and California. **At the table** — a natural partner for grilled fish, shellfish and other seafood. **Cellaring** — generally best enjoyed young and fresh, within a couple of years, though a few structured versions can hold longer.
