Mount Edelstone is a single Eden Valley vineyard planted to Shiraz in 1912 on its own roots, and the Henschke family have bottled it separately since 1952 — one of the first Australian single-vineyard wines and still among the finest. Eden Valley's altitude and cool nights give it a very different shape from Barossa Shiraz below: red and dark berry fruit with black pepper, violet, anise, dried herb and a savoury, earthy depth. Medium-full rather than heavy, with fine sinewy tannin and an acid line that carries the wine for decades. Perfume and structure over sheer weight.
