Trento DOC is Italy's mountain answer to Champagne, made by the traditional method in the Alpine valleys of Trentino from Chardonnay with Pinot Nero. Altitude does the work: vineyards climb to seven hundred metres on steep slopes, and the cold preserves an acid line that gives the wines real precision. Ferrari, founded at Trento in 1902 by Giulio Ferrari after studying in Champagne, effectively created the category and remains its defining house. Expect green apple and pear with white blossom and citrus, a fine persistent bead, and bready, faintly buttery depth from time on lees. Dry, taut and mineral rather than rich. The F1 connection is a sponsorship — Ferrari Trento pours on the Formula One podium — and has nothing to do with the car company.
