Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, low tannin, medium acidity, dry

Viognier from York Mountain, the coolest of Epoch's three sites and a separate AVA from Paso Robles proper — planted in 2015 on sand and fragmented sandstone, and one of only three vineyard-designate wines they bottle from it. Cooler ground is exactly what Viognier needs in a warm region: it keeps the variety's apricot and honeysuckle perfume from tipping into the oily, blowsy weight that undoes so many Californian examples. Expect stone fruit and white flowers with a citrus edge and a fine textural grip. Serve it around 10°C. Viognier's aromatics are its whole appeal and they are the first thing to go, so this is not a bottle to keep for long.

Where it comes from

California, United States

California is the powerhouse of American wine, stretching down the western coast of the United States and responsible for the vast majority of the country's production.

Viognier

Viognier is a white grape from the northern Rhône Valley in France, long the signature of the tiny appellation Condrieu and a variety that came close to disappearing before a revival spread it far beyond its Rhône home.
