Mourvèdre grown across Epoch's estate vineyards on the west side of Paso Robles, and the variety their warm limestone hillsides suit unusually well. Brooding and savoury: dark plum and black cherry wrapped in game, leather, damp earth and dried herb, with the faintly wild, meaty character that makes Mourvèdre worth the patience it demands. The tannins are firm and take years to soften. Closed and severe when young, broad and complete with age — the last of Epoch's reds to come around and among the last to fade. Serve it cooler than the Syrahs and give it something braised.
