Zinfandel leads, but this is a field blend rather than a varietal wine — Mourvèdre, Syrah and a handful of other Paderewski varieties join it, which is what keeps it from tipping into the jammy heat Paso Zinfandel can fall into. Bramble and black cherry with a dusting of sweet spice and a savoury, peppery edge from the Rhône varieties, full-bodied and generous but held in shape. Epoch grow fourteen varieties on Paderewski and this is where several of the odds and ends find a purpose. Drink it earlier than the Syrahs; it is generous young and does not need a decade.
