Tablas Creek was founded in 1989 by the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel and the American importer Robert Haas, after a four-year search for soil and climate resembling Châteauneuf-du-Pape; they imported and propagated all fourteen traditional Beaucastel varieties, and the 270-acre estate became the first Regenerative Organic Certified winery in the world — dry-farmed, biodynamic, with sheep and alpacas among the vines. Alouette is their deliberate exception: a chillable red drawn from the highest-toned, palest and juiciest Grenache lots of the vintage, chosen for near-term drinking and raised in stainless steel with no oak whatsoever. The name means lark, both the songbird and doing something for the fun of it. Pale, vibrant red, with chaparral, yellow plum and sweet baking spice on the nose, then dusty wild strawberry and plum, leaves and flowers on the palate, and a juicy finish with refreshing acidity and just a little tannic grip. Delicious chilled, or at cellar temperature.
