Brett Grocke is a sixth-generation Barossan whose forebears planted near Krondorf in the 1840s, and this is his flagship — Shiraz from 0.4 hectares of own-rooted vines planted in 1896 on the Magnolia vineyard at Vine Vale. Deep granitic sand fed by winter streams lets the site be dry-grown, and the farming is organic and regenerative. The result defies the Barossa stereotype: violets and ripe blackberry over cured meat, garrigue, rhubarb and dark spice, powerful and persistent but never heavy, with long silty tannin and a graphite-fine finish. Closer in shape to the northern Rhône than to most of the valley around it.
