Gewürztraminer takes its name from Tramin — Termeno in Italian — a village on the Alto Adige wine road, and this is the variety's ancestral home. Elena Walch is based in Tramin itself, in a house the family has held since the nineteenth century, and she is among the producers who transformed Alto Adige's reputation from bulk to benchmark. The variety is unmistakable: lychee and rose petal above all, with grapefruit, ginger and a dusting of exotic spice, full-bodied and low in acidity with an oily, almost viscous texture. Alto Adige's Alpine altitude gives it more definition and lift than warmer sites manage. Finished dry here, though the aromatics are so heady that many people taste sweetness that is not present.
