Schiava (Vernatsch in the German spoken across Alto Adige) is the region's traditional light red and one of the palest in Italy, once the most planted variety there and now much reduced, which makes good examples worth seeking. Elena Walch's is a pale, translucent ruby with strawberry and violet and a distinctive bitter-almond finish, very light tannin and refreshing acidity. A red to serve chilled and drink young, closer in weight to a rosé than most reds.
