**Gewürztraminer** is a pink-skinned white grape whose roots trace to the village of Tramin in Italy's Alto Adige, a mutation of the older Traminer family. Its name literally means "spiced Traminer," a fitting label for one of the most instantly recognisable of all white wines. **In the glass** — richly perfumed with lychee, rose petal, ginger and exotic spice, it is typically full-bodied, low in acidity and deep golden in colour, with an oily texture and styles running from dry to lusciously sweet. **Where it grows** — Alsace in France is its most celebrated home, alongside its Alto Adige birthplace; it also thrives in Germany, Austria, New Zealand and cooler pockets of North America. **At the table** — a classic foil for spicy Asian dishes, and superb with pungent cheeses like Munster and with foie gras. **Cellaring** — dry versions drink well young but can hold several years, while sweet late-harvest bottlings age beautifully for decades.
