Tasting profile
Structure: medium-bodied, medium tannin, medium acidity, dry
Guigal's Côtes du Rhône is one of the most widely bought wines in France, and deservedly — the house is far better known for its single-vineyard Côte-Rôties, and this benefits from the same cellar at a fraction of the price. Unusually for the appellation, it is Syrah-led rather than Grenache-led, and given a long élevage in old oak before release, which is why it shows more structure and savour than most Côtes du Rhône. Red cherry and plum with garrigue — the scrubby herb and lavender character of the south — plus black pepper and dried herbs. Medium-bodied with soft approachable tannin and a warm finish. Honest and food-shaped rather than ambitious, and it drinks well from release across several years. Grilled sausages, roast chicken, lamb stew, charcuterie. Serve slightly cool.
Serving: Serve at 15–17 °C.
