Rhône Valley

**Rhône Valley** (Vallée du Rhône) follows the Rhône river through southeastern France and splits into two distinct halves with very different personalities. **Wines & grapes** — The steep northern Rhône makes Syrah-based reds (Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage) and whites from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. The broader, warmer south favours Grenache-led blends, most famously Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which can draw on more than a dozen permitted grapes. **Character** — Northern wines are focused and peppery; southern wines are warm, generous, and herb-scented, shaped by the drying Mistral wind and stony soils. **Good to know** — The rounded galets (large pebbles) of Châteauneuf-du-Pape store daytime heat and release it at night.
