Nerello Mascalese from the northern slopes of Etna, where Donnafugata farm between Randazzo and Castiglione di Sicilia at 730 to 750 metres: high, dry and cool-breezed, with sharp day-to-night swings, on sandy volcanic soils inside the drystone lava terraces, partly trained to the traditional Etna alberello. This is the estate wine below their two crus, made with restraint: about eighteen months split between tank and second- and third-passage barriques, so no new oak, then at least eighteen months in bottle before release. Pale ruby, with sour cherry and red berries over spice, fresh balsamic notes and forest floor; juicy on the palate with silky tannins and a long, mineral finish. Closer in shape to Nebbiolo or Pinot Noir than to anything else in Sicily; serve it at 16 to 18°C, not warmer.
