Despite the name, this is a RED wine — "Gallet Blanc" refers to the white quartzite stones of the terroir, not the colour of the wine. It is 100% Syrah from Côte-Rôtie, drawn from parcels at Ampuis and Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône on decomposed quartzite schist: Le Plomb, Côte Bodin, Le Grand Taillis, Fontjean, Servonnière and Le Mont. François Villard was a chef before he made his first Condrieu in 1991, and now works across six northern Rhône appellations, certified organic from 2023. He harvests later than his neighbours, seeking full ripeness rather than overripeness, ferments with a high proportion of whole clusters and ages eighteen months in barrel. Expect blackberry and black olive over violets, smoked meat and cracked pepper, silky-textured with well-integrated tannins, a mineral edge and a faint salinity on the finish.
