Northern Rhône Syrah from François Villard, better known for Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie — and this is his entry cuvée, made from young vines and purchased fruit around Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône rather than from the classified slopes. Worth knowing what that means: the wine is bottled as Vin de France or IGP rather than under an appellation, which is exactly why it costs a fraction of his Côte-Rôtie while being made by the same hands in the same cellar. The name means "the call of the Sirens". Dark plum and black olive with violet, white pepper and a smoked-meat savour — the Northern Rhône register in miniature. Medium-bodied with supple, well-integrated tannin and a fresh, peppery finish. Made for drinking rather than keeping. Good young, and comfortable over several years. Serve slightly cool. Grilled lamb chops, roast duck, charcuterie, herbed pork.
