This Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes from Mont-Redon, one of the appellation's larger and more consistently traditional estates, on the high plateau in the north-west of the zone where the galets roulés lie thickest. These rounded quartzite cobbles absorb the day's heat and release it overnight, ripening Grenache fully even in cool years. Grenache leads, with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Dried cherry and red plum come with garrigue, roasted herbs, leather and black pepper. It is full-bodied and warm, with soft-edged tannin, made in the classical register: savoury and earthy rather than extracted or oaky. It is approachable earlier than many Châteauneufs and has the structure to hold a decade.
