Derthona

Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, high acidity, dry

Derthona, named after the Roman name for Tortona, is the name Colli Tortonesi producers give their Timorasso, Piedmont's near-vanished native white revived from the late 1980s. This bottling is from Castrum Roche, the label of Azienda Agricola Costamagna Isacco in La Morra. Timorasso makes a structured, mineral white: white peach, pear and citrus with flint, hazelnut and acacia honey, firm acidity and a long, saline finish. Fresh young, it gains honeyed, faintly petrolly depth with a few years in bottle, much as Riesling does.
