Tasting profile
Structure: light-bodied, low tannin, medium acidity, dry
Chardonnay in the Salento is a long way from Burgundy or Napa, and this makes no attempt to pretend otherwise. It belongs to Cantine De Falco's everyday Linea De Falco — the house has been at Novoli near Lecce since 1944 — and it is built for freshness rather than complexity: fermented entirely in temperature-controlled stainless steel with no oak and no lees work, and bottled at a modest 12%. Straw yellow with greenish glints, with soft orchard and citrus fruit, a little white flower and a clean, uncomplicated finish. Southern sun gives it ripeness; the low alcohol and early bottling keep it light on its feet. Not a wine that rewards analysis, and none the worse for it — the house recommends it with seafood antipasti and fish, which is exactly right. Serve properly cold, around 10 to 12°C.
