Sauvignon Winkl

Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, low tannin, high acidity, dry

Sauvignon Blanc from the Winkl site in Terlano, on the porphyry slopes of Alto Adige — a cooperative with an extraordinary reputation, and a place where this variety behaves quite unlike anywhere else. Altitude and volcanic rock replace Marlborough's tropical exuberance with tension: grapefruit and elderflower over white peach, a green herbal lift and a pronounced stony, almost salty minerality. Medium-bodied, unoaked, with cutting acidity. Terlano whites are also famously long-lived, so this rewards a few years where most Sauvignon does not.
