Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, low tannin, medium acidity, dry

Chambourcin is a French-American hybrid and something close to a Hunter Valley speciality — almost nobody grows it elsewhere in Australia, but its resistance to downy mildew makes real sense in a humid subtropical climate where that disease is the annual enemy. It is a teinturier, with red flesh as well as red skin, so the colour is startlingly deep while the tannin stays very soft. Bright raspberry and dark cherry with a herbal, earthy edge. Medium-bodied, juicy and approachable, and good served slightly cool.
