Ata Rangi's Bordeaux-style blend with a portion of Syrah, from Martinborough at the southern tip of New Zealand's North Island. The estate is best known for Pinot Noir — one of the wines that established Martinborough's reputation — so Célèbre is the less-heralded second string, and made accordingly: a wine for the table rather than the cellar. Martinborough is cool, dry and wind-exposed, which keeps the reds medium-bodied and savoury rather than ripe and plush. Dark plum and redcurrant with cedar, dried herbs and a peppery lift from the Syrah. Medium-bodied with supple tannin and balanced acidity, finishing dry and savoury. Good from release and holding a few years. Roast lamb, a beef casserole, herb-crusted chicken. Serve it slightly cool.
