One of four single-vineyard Pinots from Escarpment, alongside Kupe, Kiwa and Pahi — the estate names its best wines after the sites rather than the variety. Te Rehua is the smallest of them, 1.1 hectares on the edge of the escarpment cut by the Huangarua River, on the alluvial loams over deep gravel that define the Martinborough Terrace. It was planted in 1990 with as many Pinot clones as could then be found, scattered at random, and that deliberate diversity is a large part of the wine's complexity. Escarpment was founded in 1999 by Larry McKenna, who pioneered Burgundian high-density planting in Martinborough. Sheltered and consistently the ripest of the four sites. Dark cherry and red plum with dried herbs, black olive, paprika and forest floor, over fine dense tannin and bright acidity. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Savoury and structured rather than fruit-driven. Duck, lamb, wild mushrooms. Worth a decade.
