Martinborough

**Martinborough** ... — a small, highly regarded wine town in the Wairarapa district at the southern end of New Zealand's North Island. It built its reputation on one grape above all. **Wines & grapes** — Pinot Noir is the star here, producing wines of finesse and concentration. Aromatic whites also do well, including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling and some Chardonnay. **Character** — Free-draining gravel terraces, low rainfall and cool, breezy conditions give small yields and intensely flavoured fruit. The Pinot Noirs are typically perfumed and silky with fine tannins, and Martinborough is regarded as one of New Zealand's benchmark regions for the variety despite its modest size.
