A Sardinian red from the Sulcis, in the island's south-west, and the product of an unusual collaboration: Agricola Punica is a joint venture between the Santadi cooperative and the team behind Sassicaia, with the late Giacomo Tachis — the oenologist who created Sassicaia and Tignanello — shaping the wine. Old-vine Carignano leads, with Bovale Sardo and a little Syrah. Carignano on Sulcis sand behaves quite unlike Carignan elsewhere: the ungrafted bush vines survived phylloxera in that soil, and the fruit comes out deep and structured rather than rustic. Black cherry and blackberry with garrigue herb, black pepper, liquorice and dried plum. Full-bodied with firm tannin and a warm, savoury Mediterranean finish. Give it a few years and something roasted.
