Swartland

**Swartland** ... — a warm, dry-farmed region north of Cape Town in South Africa's Western Cape, and one of the country's most exciting sources of characterful wine. **Wines & grapes** — Old-vine Chenin Blanc is a calling card, alongside Rhône-inspired reds and whites built on Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and other Mediterranean varieties. **Character** — Hot summers, granite and shale soils, and many old bush vines yield concentrated, textured wines. A wave of independent, minimal-intervention producers has given the area a reputation for expressive, terroir-focused bottlings rather than heavy, over-oaked styles. **Good to know** — Once known mainly for bulk wine and wheat, Swartland's revival over the past couple of decades has made it a byword for South African quality and originality.
