**Southwest France** — known in French as the Sud-Ouest, a loose grouping of scattered wine areas across the southwest of the country, inland and south of Bordeaux, reaching toward the Pyrenees. It is a treasure trove of local grapes found almost nowhere else. **Wines & grapes** — Reds are the highlight: Malbec makes the dark, firm wines of Cahors, and Tannat gives the powerful, tannic reds of Madiran. Bordeaux varieties like Merlot and the Cabernets appear widely, while distinctive whites come from grapes such as Gros and Petit Manseng, notably in the sweet and dry wines of Jurançon. **Character** — Styles are diverse but often robust and characterful, with many old regional varieties preserved here. **Good to know** — Historically overshadowed by neighbouring Bordeaux, the region offers great value and unusual, distinctive flavours.
