Liguria

**Liguria** — A thin, mountainous arc along Italy's northwest coast — the Italian Riviera — Liguria makes small quantities of distinctive wine on steep terraces above the sea. **Wines & grapes** — Whites dominate, chiefly Vermentino and Pigato, both crisp and herb-scented. Reds come from Rossese, notably around Dolceacqua, and the Cinque Terre is famous for its rare sweet Sciacchetrà. **Character** — Vineyards clinging to sheer coastal slopes, sea breezes and poor soils yield fresh, mineral, saline wines. Production is tiny and much of it is drunk locally, so bottles are prized finds.
