Vermentino Nero is a genuinely rare Ligurian red, and despite the name it is a distinct dark-skinned variety rather than a red version of white Vermentino — the two are unrelated. Colli di Luni, on the Tuscan border, is close to its last stronghold, and Cantine Lunae Bosoni are among the few keeping it in the ground. Dark berry fruit and dried herb with a savoury, faintly saline edge that echoes the coastal setting, and a fine tannin that gives it more structure than Ligurian reds usually carry. Medium-bodied and lifted by good acidity rather than weight. Worth a couple of years for the tannins to knit; good with the region's own cooking, from rabbit to grilled meat and hard cheese.
