**Oseleta** is a red grape from the Veneto in northeast Italy, a nearly forgotten variety that was rescued from near-extinction in recent decades. It is prized as a blending grape that adds colour, tannin and backbone. **In the glass** — very deeply coloured, with concentrated aromas of dark berries, spice and a herbal edge. Its small, thick-skinned berries give wines that are firmly tannic and structured, which is why it usually plays a supporting rather than a solo role. **Where it grows** — the Valpolicella zone of the Veneto is its home, where it is added in small proportions to Valpolicella and Amarone blends to reinforce structure. Plantings remain very limited. **At the table** — best alongside the rich meats and braises that suit the Veneto's fuller reds. **Cellaring** — its tannin and depth make it well suited to ageing, particularly within the long-lived blends it contributes to.
