Bodegas Vinícola Real sits at Albelda de Iregua in Rioja Alta, and 200 Monges is its flagship range — the name recalls the two hundred monks of the region's monastic winemaking past, using the archaic Riojan spelling. The range runs from Reserva through Reserva Selección Especial to Gran Reserva, with vintages going back to the mid-1990s. Tempranillo leads, with Graciano for structure and dark fruit and a little Garnacha or Mazuelo. Reserva requires three years' ageing with one in oak; this house goes further, using eighteen months or more in new American and French barricas. Expect dark cherry and blackberry with tobacco leaf, vanilla oak, dried herbs and leather, full-bodied with firm tannins. Traditional in style and known to keep developing in the glass for hours.
